You first want to get #y# to one side, and the numbers to the other.

Subtract #1 1/3# from both sides:

#y+cancel(1 1/3)-cancel(1 1/3)=3 1/18-1 1/3#

To work this, we have to multiply the #1/3# by 1 disguised as #6/6#:

#y=3+1/18-1-(1/3xx6/6)#

#y=3-1+1/18-6/18=2-5/18#; we split the #2#

#y=(1+18/18)-5/18=1+13/18=1 13/18#
